Esports | StarCraft II | Serral — The 4-2 WCS Final at Anaheim Convention Center

On November 3, 2018, Joona “Serral” Sotala took a 3–0 lead over Kim “Stats” Dae-yeob on the StarCraft II stage inside the Anaheim Convention Center, but Stats won the next two games and forced the best-of-seven Grand Final into a sixth game.

The match decided Blizzard Entertainment’s publisher-run 2018 World Championship Series Global Finals, the culminating StarCraft II competition at BlizzCon 2018, after the tournament’s earlier group stage had been played during Opening Week.

Serral, a Finnish Zerg player, reached the final after defeating Park “Dark” Ryung-woo 3–0 in the quarterfinal and Lee “Rogue” Byung-ryul 3–1 in the semifinal, while South Korean Protoss player Stats advanced by sweeping Kim “sOs” Yoo-jin 3–0.

The offline final used StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void on the Windows PC client distributed through Battle.net; the tournament record identifies patch 4.6.2, the Americas server, one-versus-one play, and a first-to-four-games series.

For a non-player, each game begins with one base and a small workforce: competitors gather minerals and vespene gas, expand production, and build armies from asymmetric factions, with one game win added to the series score when the opponent can no longer continue and concedes.

Serral’s Zerg could replace units rapidly and shift its composition through biological production, while Stats’ Protoss relied on fewer, more expensive units and warp-based reinforcement, so the 3–2 score still left Serral one game from the title and Stats needing two consecutive wins.

In game six, both players reached large air forces, but Serral repeatedly damaged Stats’ economy until the Protoss player conceded; the 4–2 series result made Serral the first non-Korean winner of the WCS Global Finals, a scope Blizzard described as the first non-Korean victory at a StarCraft global final event.

The pin marks the Anaheim Convention Center at 800 West Katella Avenue, where the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final were staged; it anchors the live playoff stage that produced the title and does not assign the preceding Opening Week group matches to this building.
