Finance History | 420 Montgomery Street — The Express Office That Opened After the Gold Ships

People treat Wells Fargo as a Charlotte or New York bank that keeps a San Francisco letterhead.

The Pacific office opened on this street.

On 18 March 1852 Henry Wells and William G. Fargo organized Wells, Fargo and Company in New York after other American Express directors refused a California extension.

Samuel P. Carter and Reuben W. Washburn opened the San Francisco banking and express house on 13 July 1852.

The first rooms were a two-story brick building at 424 Montgomery Street, on the east side north of California Street.

A later marker at 420 Montgomery records the same opening.

The firm moved gold, mail, and deposits between the mines and the port while other Gold Rush houses failed in the 1855 panic.

Adams and Company, then the larger express name on the same block, did not survive that year.

Wells Fargo kept a banking window and an express window under one sign.

That double book is the mechanism: specie movement paid for the deposits, and the deposits paid for the next coach.

The present 420 Montgomery building later held the headquarters and a public museum.

The first 1852 interior does not survive.

The sidewalk on Montgomery is the public pin.

An S&P 500 bank still files from San Francisco even after later towers took the staff.
