Before the 372nd U.S. Infantry sailed for home, its men put their own money into a monument. The regiment had been assembled out of a separate battalion from Ohio, another from the District of Columbia, and separate companies from Connecticut, Massachusetts and Maryland, and it spent the war under French command, latterly in Général Mariano Goybet's 157th Division. The Historic American Buildings Survey records that the subscription was raised in France before the regiment left, and that the building of the memorial was entrusted to Goybet and to Colonel Augustin Quillet. A granite obelisk went up on the road south of Monthois, at what the survey calls the furthest point of the advance in the Champagne. The American Legion's register of overseas memorials dates it to 11 January 1919 and credits the 372nd Infantry Regiment Association.
The commission came afterwards. On 21 November 1924 the American Battle Monuments Commission completed a programme of battlefield monuments and chapels costing about three million dollars, covering, in the words of a House committee the following February, every American division that fought in an active sector in France and Belgium "with the exception of the Ninety-third colored division". Representative Hamilton Fish's bill would have authorised thirty thousand dollars for a monument to that division's four regiments, most likely near Séchault. The Committee on Foreign Affairs reported it favourably on 9 February 1925, noting that at least five commission monuments were going up for fewer battle casualties than the four regiments had suffered. The commission built none.
On the east verge of the D982, roughly 1,250 metres south of the village, the obelisk stands in a clearing at the edge of a crop field, reached by a few stone steps up from the road. It carries the regiment's name and the dates 26 September to 7 October 1918. The same register records that the American Battle Monuments Commission maintains it, and that it was restored in the 1980s.
