Military History | Musée de la Bataille de Fromelles — The Objects Are Catalogued in Canberra

The building barely rises out of the field. David Serero designed it half-buried: a single octagonal hall pushing up through a grassed mound, its concrete poured in visible lifts like strata, so that from the road the museum reads as a swelling in the ground rather than a building standing on it. The octagon answers two things at once: the drum of the village church, and the plan of the cemetery seventy metres away, where the 250 men recovered from the pits at Pheasant Wood were reburied in 2010.

The museum did not begin as a state institution. Through the 1990s the battle was kept in the village's own hands, in a display of objects and documents that an association of local volunteers ran inside the Fromelles town hall. The Communauté de communes des Weppes commissioned the present building, which opened in 2014, on the museum's own account on 18 July, the eve of the anniversary. It is run today by the Métropole Européenne de Lille, and in February 2023 the French state granted it the appellation Musée de France, which makes its inventoried collections legally inalienable.

There is a gap at the centre of it. Oxford Archaeology, which carried out the 2009 recovery, records in its final report that most of the artefacts lifted from the pits — badges, buttons, boots, identity discs — are curated at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, and that the excavation's primary records and photographs were handed over at Australia House in January 2010. The material evidence of what happened in this field is catalogued on the other side of the world, and what the museum shows in its place is the story of the men, researched here.

It keeps a reserve it does not normally display, and brings it out for occasional public sessions. It opens every day but Tuesday.
