American Fiction|Brookline Booksmith — The Aisle Where Monk Finds Himself Misfiled

The scene lasts less than a minute and it carries the whole film. Monk walks into a bookstore looking for his own novel, a dense retelling of Aeschylus, and finds it shelved under African American Studies. He picks up the copies and carries them to Literature himself. A clerk asks if he needs help. He does not.
That walk was filmed at Brookline Booksmith, 279 Harvard Street, in Coolidge Corner. Location director Stephen Hartman chose it partly for convenience and partly for a piece of architecture: the store's aisles run long and dead straight, which let Jeffrey Wright cross from one section to another in a single unbroken take. No cut, no cheat. The joke inside the joke is that the Booksmith has been independent since 1961 and was cast here as the kind of chain the film is needling.
It is a real shop and it is open to anyone. The ground floor is new books; the stairs at the back drop into a used-book cellar that smells the way a used-book cellar should, with a long table of remainders and a cat's-cradle of handwritten staff cards taped to the shelves. Walk Monk's line — Literature to the far wall and back — and then look at how this store actually organises its stock. That is the argument the scene starts, and the Booksmith answers it every day without saying a word.
