American Fiction|Hamilton Restaurant & Bar, Coolidge Corner — The Dark Room Two Doors From the Bookshop

Half a block down Beacon Street from the bookstore, the Hamilton sits behind a plain door at number 1366 and does not advertise itself. Low ceiling, dark wood, a long bar, booths along the wall, the Green Line grinding past outside. It was one of the Brookline rooms the American Fiction crew used during their three days in the neighbourhood, and you can see why a location scout stopped here: it photographs as somewhere people have been drinking for thirty years, because they have.
The film needs rooms like this. Monk spends most of the story in places designed to be looked at — festival panels, publishers' offices, an awards dinner — and the few scenes that let him breathe happen in ordinary interiors where nobody is performing. A neighbourhood bar in Coolidge Corner does that work without a single line of dialogue explaining it. It is not a set. It has bad light in the good way, a menu that has never chased a trend, and regulars who do not look up when the door opens.
Go in the late afternoon before the dinner rush, sit at the bar rather than a booth, and order something plain. The trolley passes every few minutes and you feel it through the floor. That vibration is the sound of the neighbourhood the film chose over the postcard version of Boston, and it costs nothing to sit in.
