Semiconductor History | Pulse Electronics HQ, 22 May 2018 — YAGEO Buys the Magnetics Between Chips and Cables
kevin
The black Pulse E2009 module in the cover contains miniature pulse transformers. On a 10BASE-T network interface, components like these isolate the circuitry and help carry signals between active silicon and a cable.
That easily overlooked position in an electronic system helps explain what YAGEO bought here. On 22 May 2018, the Taiwan-based passive-components maker announced an agreement to acquire all of Pulse Electronics through its wholly owned Pluto Merger subsidiary.
The announced cash transaction was valued at US$740 million.
Pulse brought a portfolio that extended beyond YAGEO’s familiar chip resistors and multilayer ceramic capacitors. Its products included signal and power magnetics, antennas, wireless components and connectors—the parts that condition power, preserve signals and connect semiconductor devices to the physical world.
The deal therefore changed the shape of YAGEO’s component business. It added deeper design-in positions in automotive electronics, industrial equipment, networking and communications, while giving the combined group more ways to sell multiple component families into the same customer platform.
The date matters: 22 May marks the signed agreement and public announcement, not the legal completion. Pulse’s own later account says the acquisition closed in December 2018, when the company formally became part of YAGEO.
YAGEO’s subsequent offering documents also record Pulse as a December 2018 acquisition.
The pin marks 15255 Innovation Drive in San Diego, an address identified in Pulse’s 2018 technical literature. Public sources establish the headquarters address, but do not identify the room in which the agreement was signed.
YAGEO still lists the same building as its San Diego sales office, giving the corporate lineage a surviving physical address.
The cover is an older Pulse product rather than a photograph of the transaction: a Pulse E2009 10BASE-T interface module mounted on a Siemens network board. It makes the acquisition legible at component scale—a small magnetic package sitting between chips, copper traces and the outside network.
