The 40-Year-Old Virgin|Encino Courtyard — The Big Box Where Nobody Went Home

Smart Tech never existed. The stereo wall, the flickering televisions, the break room where four grown men interrogate one another about sex — all of it was built inside a vacant retail unit at the Encino Courtyard, a 1980s shopping center on the north side of Ventura Boulevard at White Oak Avenue, and struck when the shoot ended in 2005.
What survives is the container. Encino Courtyard is still a working suburban mall: a wide asphalt lot, a colonnade of stucco arches, tenants that turn over every few years. Stand in the parking lot and the geography of the film snaps into place. This is a store you drive to. The film understood that. Andy Stitzer bikes here, and the joke of the whole movie is set by that one detail — a man arriving under his own power at a place designed for cars.
Judd Apatow shot most of his first feature within a few miles of this lot, in about forty days, on a budget under thirty million dollars, and let his cast improvise until the takes ran long. The result made more than six times its cost. Almost none of it needed a studio.
Come on a weekday afternoon, when the lot is two-thirds empty and the light is flat. That emptiness is the film's real subject: a man in his forties, clocking in, going home, clocking in again.
