65|Agness and the Lower Rogue — where the pavement quits and the forest closes in

Thirty-odd miles up a narrow road from Gold Beach, at the place where the Illinois River empties into the Rogue, there is a scatter of buildings called Agness. A few dozen people, a store that keeps its own hours, a mail boat that still comes up the river. The film went inland here for the country the beaches could not give it: dense conifer, big down timber, canyon walls, water moving hard and green over rock.

The drive is the experience. The road climbs above the river and hangs there, one lane in places, with turnouts that look straight down onto gravel bars and gin-clear pools. Come in from the water instead and you take a jet boat up from Gold Beach, which is how most visitors do it and how the river reads best — a long corridor of forest with no shoulder, no wires, nothing to date it.

Get out at the confluence and listen. Two rivers arriving at slightly different pitches, and nothing else. That silence is the reason a crew hauled equipment this far.
