Biography | Akio Morita — The Kosugaya Museum That Preserved a Family's Business History

On 18 July 2020, the Akio Morita Library opened in Kosugaya, on the grounds associated with the Morita family.

The museum gave a public setting to the lives of Sony co-founder Akio Morita and his wife Yoshiko.

Its governing foundation identifies 18 July as the opening anniversary, while the museum's own history records the opening month and year.

The address is 7-4 Kameido, Kosugaya, in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture.

That location matters because Morita's background belonged to an established sake-brewing family, whose fifteenth head he became.

The museum connects that inheritance to the very different enterprise for which he became internationally known.

It is a place to examine a life after its conclusion, rather than evidence that he was born on this particular plot.

Morita was born in Nagoya in 1921; the date attached here is the museum opening, almost a century later.

The distinction preserves both the family's connection to Kosugaya and the geography of his birth.

The collection also gives Yoshiko a place in the story.

The foundation describes her background in the family that founded the Sanseido publishing business and her role in the couple's hospitality and relationships.

The city's tourism account likewise presents the museum through objects left by both partners, covering public achievements and personal life.

A business biography told only through products and executive titles can obscure those relationships.

At Kosugaya, the surviving objects offer another way into the history: how family background and social connections formed part of an international business career.

The contemporary building makes that interpretation accessible without pretending to recreate a childhood room.

It stands as a memorial museum, distinct from the family's other buildings and from the nearby brewery displays.

Visits are by reservation through the museum; the public exhibition does not make surrounding private property open to visitors.
