Biography | Arnold Schwarzenegger — The Thal House He Left to Pursue Bodybuilding

People often treat the house at Linakstrasse 9 as a museum assembled after Arnold Schwarzenegger became famous.

Its more important story is the moment he walked out of it.

Schwarzenegger spent his childhood and teenage years in this former official residence in Thal, west of Graz. His family occupied an apartment in the building while his father served in the local police.

The house was modest, and the surrounding fields and forest made the ambitions formed inside it look improbable. Those ambitions were already concrete: bodybuilding first, then America and film.

He began training while he still lived here. The museum now displays early weights and a pulley machine associated with those home workouts, giving the building a direct link to the discipline that became his first profession.

In 1966, at nineteen, Schwarzenegger left this house for Munich to pursue bodybuilding more seriously. The museum records the move, while independent accounts likewise place the end of his Thal years and the start of his Munich phase in 1966.

That departure mattered more than a simple change of address. Munich gave him work in a gym, access to stronger competition and a base from which to enter the international bodybuilding circuit.

The results came quickly. He won his first amateur Mr. Universe title in London in 1967, then moved to the United States in 1968 as bodybuilding opened the route he had imagined from Austria.

The building is no longer a private residence. It opened as the Arnold Schwarzenegger Museum in 2011, with rooms devoted to his sporting, film and political careers.
