Biography | Ellen Johnson Sirleaf — The Oslo Hall Where Three Women Shared the Peace Prize

The Nobel Peace Prize did not simply add an international honor to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf’s presidency; its 2011 ceremony placed her work beside two other women whose methods began outside government.

On 10 December 2011, Sirleaf received the prize at Oslo City Hall with Liberian peace organizer Leymah Gbowee and Yemeni journalist and activist Tawakkol Karman.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the prize jointly, recognizing their nonviolent work for women’s safety and for women’s full participation in peacebuilding.

The grouping was central to the award’s meaning.

Sirleaf represented electoral office, Gbowee represented a mass peace movement that helped end Liberia’s civil war, and Karman represented sustained civic resistance during Yemen’s uprising.
