Biography | Tim Cook — The Clock Tower Campus Where He Took an Industrial Engineering Degree
kevin
People treat Apple's operations chief as a product of Silicon Valley.
The degree that trained him was taken on this Alabama campus.
Timothy D. Cook enrolled at Auburn University after Robertsdale High School in 1978.
He finished a bachelor of science in industrial engineering in 1982.
The College of Engineering had offered industrial engineering since a 1945 reorganization of the school.
He also worked through Auburn's cooperative education program while he studied.
The brick clock tower on this quad is William J. Samford Hall.
It went up in 1888 after Old Main burned on the same site. It was already the campus landmark when he arrived.
It still holds the university's administration offices.
The industrial and systems engineering department now sits in the Shelby Center at 345 West Magnolia Avenue.
That complex did not open until late 2007, twenty-five years after he left.
Do not look for his classrooms in the later glass. They were older rooms on this same campus.
Auburn later named him a Distinguished Auburn Engineer and an Outstanding Industrial and Systems Engineering Alumnus.
He endowed a professorship and a leadership scholarship in the department and chaired its alumni council.
In 2010 he came back here to give the commencement address.
In February 2026 the National Academy of Engineering elected him in that year's class.
The public pin is the clock tower a visitor can still find, not a vanished lecture room.
