Biography | Tim Cook — The Cupertino Board That Named the Operating Officer Chief Executive

People treat a chief-executive handover at Apple as a theater keynote.

This one was a letter and a press release with a Cupertino dateline.

On 24 August 2011 Apple's board announced that Steve Jobs had resigned as chief executive and that the board had named Tim Cook, until then chief operating officer, as CEO.

Jobs was elected chairman.

Cook joined the board the same day.

Jobs's letter to the board and the Apple community, published by the company that afternoon, said he could no longer meet the duties of the office and recommended that the succession plan name Cook.

Art Levinson, speaking for the board, pointed to Cook's thirteen years at the company as the reason for the vote.

Cook was fifty.

He had already run day-to-day operations during Jobs's medical leaves, including the leave that began in January 2011.

The announcement did not invent a new operator.

It made the acting title permanent.

Apple Park opened in 2017.

The 2011 decision belongs to the older loop, not to the later ring.

Cook held the chief-executive title until 1 September 2026, when he became executive chairman.
