Biography | Bernadette Meehan — The Somers Campus Where a Bronx-Born Student Headed Toward the World

People treat Bernadette Meehan as a diplomat who arrived already speaking Spanish and briefing presidents.

She was born in the Bronx on 3 August 1975 and raised in Pleasantville, New York.

The school that sent her out was not in the city. It was John F. Kennedy Catholic High School, on 64 acres at 54 Route 138 in Somers.

The campus had opened under that name in 1966, after St. Mary's High School in nearby Katonah closed its last class.

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis came for the dedication in May 1968.

By the early 1990s the buildings still sat among woods and a lake in northern Westchester, drawing students from Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, and the Bronx.

Meehan attended Bedford Road School and Pleasantville Middle School first.

Then she commuted to Somers for the Catholic preparatory years.

In the summer of 1992, between junior and senior year, the Pleasantville International Association sent her to Río Gallegos, Argentina, as an exchange student.

She was sixteen.

The Examiner News later recorded that the trip, and her father's postcards from banking work in Asia and Africa, made travel feel like a possible life rather than a postcard.

She graduated from Kennedy Catholic in 1993.

The school has since taken the name John F. Kennedy Catholic Preparatory School.

The pin is the public campus, not a childhood house in Pleasantville.

What started here was not a Foreign Service career. It was a Westchester student who had already crossed a hemisphere once, and who would next take political science at Boston College.

The later titles — NSC spokesperson, ambassador, Wikimedia chief executive — sit on top of that ordinary commencement.

No hospital record for the Bronx birth has been published with a building name, so this campus is the first place that can be stood on with a date and an address.
