Reply 1997|Gwangalli Beach — The Sand the Series Named Home

The first thing the series gives you is not a classroom. It is a strip of sand facing Suyeong Bay.

Reply 1997 is set in Gwangalli. Sung Shi-won, Yoon Yoon-je, and the rest of Gwang-an High live in the blocks behind this beach, speak in a Busan cadence, and treat the water as the edge of the known world. The cameras spent most of their days in Seoul. The story did not. Fans still come here because this is the neighborhood the script refused to move.

In 1997 the Diamond Bridge was still a construction rumor. The beach was already old. Kids cut through the same promenade after school. Cassette cases clicked open on the same benches. The IMF winter that the series uses as weather had already started to tighten family budgets while the sand stayed cheap and public.

Stand on Gwanganhaebyeon-ro and look at the water, not at the later skyline. That is the scale the six friends had. A municipal beach. A district high school that never existed under that name. A city that the cast, many of them actually from Gyeongsang, could pronounce without rehearsal.

The series premiered on 24 July 2012. The beach did not need a plaque. If you come at dusk the speakers from the cafes start early, and the sand still holds the heat the 1997 episodes were written around.
