Biography | John D. Rockefeller — The Last Chapter at The Casements

John D. Rockefeller died at The Casements in Ormond Beach on 23 May 1937, aged ninety-seven.

The Rockefeller Archive Center identifies this house as the place where his life ended.

By then, his years of directing Standard Oil's operations were long past.

He had retired from active leadership in 1896, although he retained the company's presidency until 1911.

That separation between title and daily responsibility helps place his final Florida years in their proper context.

The Casements was a winter home, part of a life increasingly lived away from the offices where his fortune had been assembled.

The archive records that, after his wife Laura's death, he divided months of the year between homes in Lakewood, New Jersey, and Ormond Beach.

In Florida, local memory also preserved a smaller, more personal image of Rockefeller.

A 2017 Ormond Beach newspaper account describes the dimes he handed to people, a practice remembered alongside his much larger public gifts.

The same account confirms his death at The Casements.

Those stories of individual encounters belong beside the corporate and philanthropic records, without replacing the controversies of his business career.

The house's own subsequent history gives the address another meaning.

The City of Ormond Beach now operates it as a cultural center at 25 Riverside Drive.

It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the Casements Guild provides interpretation of the building.

The interior photograph attached here shows a later view toward its central skylight.

It does not identify Rockefeller's deathbed or recreate the people present on his final morning.

What a visitor encounters is a surviving house with a public use, through which one part of his retirement can be understood.

His burial took place in Cleveland's Lake View Cemetery, linking that final chapter back to the city where his business career began.
