[VOID] Biography | John D. Rockefeller — Standard Oil Was Chartered Facing This Square

On 10 January 1870 five men signed articles that turned a Cleveland refining partnership into a million-dollar Ohio corporation named the Standard Oil Company.

The signers were John D. Rockefeller, Henry M. Flagler, Samuel Andrews, Stephen V. Harkness, and William Rockefeller. Capital was set at one million dollars in hundred-dollar shares. John D. took 2,667 of them, the largest block.

The new company's offices sat in the Cushing Block on the south side of Public Square. Erastus Cushing had razed his house there in 1868 and put up a four-story brick building with Amherst sandstone, finished in 1869. Standard Oil was among the first tenants.

The Cushing Block is gone. What faces the Square now is later commercial fabric, including the tower at 200 Public Square that Standard Oil of Ohio built in the 1980s on a neighboring frontage. The 1870 room does not survive.

The corporation was a tool, not a destination. Stock made it easier to buy rival refineries without adding loose partners. Within two years Standard controlled most of Cleveland's refining. By 1880 it refined something like nine-tenths of American oil.

That concentration later produced the 1882 trust, the Ohio lawsuit of 1892, the New Jersey holding company, and the 1911 Supreme Court breakup. All of those fights start from this charter and this Square.

Cleveland was not an afterthought. The Flats already held the refineries. The railroads and the lake made the city a transfer point. Public Square was where the paperwork sat while the stills ran down by the river.

Stand at the southeast side of the Square and look at what replaced the block. The company outgrew the building, then the city, then the legal form that created it. The date on the articles did not change.
