People treat a chief-executive handover as a stage event.
This one was a blog post.
On 10 August 2015 Larry Page published "G is for Google" on Google's official blog and filed the matching papers with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
The post created a new parent, Alphabet, with Page as chief executive and Sergey Brin as president.
It also named Sundar Pichai chief executive of a slimmer Google — search, ads, maps, YouTube, Android, apps — while the farther projects moved under Alphabet.
Page wrote that Pichai had taken product and engineering for the internet businesses the previous October, and that the board agreed it was time.
Pichai was forty-three.
He had been at the company eleven years.
The legal close of the Alphabet restructuring followed on 2 October 2015, which is when he formally assumed the Google title.
In December 2019 he added the Alphabet job after Page and Brin stepped back from day-to-day roles.
This pin is the public campus at 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, the address Google has used as headquarters since 2003.
It is not a private residence and not a claim about where he sits today.
The 2015 announcement is the moment that put his name on the building's company.
Four days earlier, IIT Kharagpur had given him a Distinguished Alumnus Award in absentia.
