People treat the handoff as a stage moment.

It was a letter and an 8-K.

On 24 August 2011 Steve Jobs wrote to Apple's board and to the company's public that he could no longer meet the duties of chief executive.

The published letter recommended that the board execute its succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

The same day the board did so.

The current report filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission lists the principal executive offices as 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, California 95014.

That is this campus.

Jobs stayed as chairman and as an employee.

Cook, then fifty, joined the board as chief executive.

The filing also recorded an award of 1,000,000 restricted stock units, scheduled to vest in two equal parts in 2016 and 2021 if he remained employed.

He had come to Apple in March 1998 as senior vice president of worldwide operations, hired from Compaq after a meeting with Jobs arranged by the recruiter Rick Devine.

He had already run day-to-day operations during Jobs's medical leaves in 2004 and 2009.

Apple named him chief operating officer on 14 October 2005, after he had been executive vice president of worldwide sales and operations since 2002.

Infinite Loop was Apple's headquarters campus from 1993 until the company shifted most executive functions to Apple Park in 2017.

The six buildings on the private loop are still Apple offices and labs.

This pin is the historic address on the 2011 filing, not a claim about where Cook works now.

The visitor who stops at the roadside sign on De Anza Boulevard is looking at the campus that held the title when the title moved.
