Biography | Tim Cook — The Clock Towers on the Quad Where an Industrial Engineer Finished in 1982

People treat industrial engineering as a footnote on a technology resume.

On this campus it was the whole degree.

Cook entered Auburn University after Robertsdale High School and took a bachelor's in industrial engineering in 1982.

He used the university's cooperative-education program, the route that splits classroom terms with paid work terms.

Samford Hall is the brick face of that campus, a reconstruction after the 1887 fire, with two clock towers on the historic quad.

It is not the engineering classroom.

The industrial-engineering department later moved into the Shelby Center on West Magnolia, a complex that opened in 2008, twenty-six years after he graduated.

Do not look for his classrooms in that later building.

Look at the older campus he had wanted since childhood.

He came back to speak at commencement in 2010, the year before Apple's board named him chief executive.

Auburn later recorded scholarships, an endowed professorship, and a seat as founding chair of the industrial-and-systems-engineering alumni council.

In 2005 the college noted his promotion to Apple's chief operating officer.

In February 2026 it noted his election to the National Academy of Engineering.

The through-line is narrower than the honors list.

He trained here to make systems move — inventory, plants, trucks — and then spent a career doing that at IBM, at Compaq, and at Apple.

The towers on this quad are what a visitor can still stand in front of.

The laboratories of 1982 are a different problem.
