Biography | Tim Cook — The High School on Golden Bear Drive That Sent a Salutatorian to Auburn

People treat Apple's operations chief as if he arrived fully formed from a California campus.

He arrived from a public high school in a Baldwin County farm town.

Timothy Donald Cook was born in Mobile on 1 November 1960, the middle of three sons of Don and Geraldine Cook.

His father worked as a foreman at the Alabama Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Company on Pinto Island.

His mother worked in a drugstore.

The family spent short spells in Mobile and in Pensacola, then settled in Robertsdale in 1971 so the three boys could stay in one school system.

The house on East Silverhill Avenue is still a private home, so this pin stays on the school, not the street.

Robertsdale High School stands at 1 Golden Bear Drive.

Cook played trombone in the band, kept the yearbook books as business manager, and finished second in the class of 1978.

Teresa Prochaska Huntsman was valedictorian.

Both of them later studied industrial engineering at Auburn.

Teachers remembered a long-limbed, careful student who asked to be moved out of an easy chemistry section because he thought he was not learning enough.

He delivered newspapers from about age twelve, then worked in a restaurant and at the drugstore with his mother.

The town in those years had a few thousand people and a lot of farmland.

He had already decided, by his later interviews with Alabama reporters, that Auburn was the college he wanted.

That decision is the hinge.

The operations career that followed — IBM, Compaq, then Apple — is a supply-chain story.

The first public record of the person who would run that career is here, on a Baldwin County campus, in a maroon-and-gold school that still lists him among its alumni.
