Esports | Hearthstone | VKLiooon — The 3-0 Global Final at Anaheim Convention Center

On November 2, 2019, Xiaomeng “VKLiooon” Li sat down opposite Brian “bloodyface” Eason at the Anaheim Convention Center and won the Hearthstone Grandmasters 2019 Global Finals 3–0. The clean sweep completed an unbeaten BlizzCon run and earned Li the $200,000 first prize from a $500,000 pool.

Hearthstone is a digital card game in which each player builds a deck around a hero class, spends an increasing supply of mana, and tries to reduce the opposing hero’s health to zero. A match is decided in games rather than rounds or maps, so the final’s 3–0 score means Li won three complete games without conceding one.

Blizzard ran the publisher-sanctioned championship on special Tournament Play Accounts in Hearthstone’s Battle.net game client. The live event fell on public build 15.4.0.35057, after the October “Doom in the Tomb” update temporarily returned 23 Wild cards to Standard and before patch 15.6 arrived on November 5.

Eight finalists from the Americas, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and China played Shield-Phase Conquest with a ban. Each competitor brought four class decks, protected one from the opponent’s ban, and then had to win with each remaining deck; group matches were best-of-three, while the semifinals and final were best-of-five.

Li opened by defeating 2017 world champion Chen “tom60229” Wei Lin 2–0, then beat Chris “Fenomeno” Tsakopoulos 2–0 to reach the single-elimination bracket. A 3–2 semifinal over Kevin “Casie” Eberlein put her into the title match with Eason.

The last game paired Li’s Highlander Hunter against Eason’s Quest Druid. Highlander decks trade away duplicate cards to activate powerful one-copy rewards, while Quest Druid builds toward a quest payoff; Li took that game to finish the series before a fourth or fifth game was needed.

The result made Li Blizzard’s first Hearthstone Global Champion from China and the first woman to win an esports title at BlizzCon. Those distinctions came from the competition actually staged inside the convention center, not from the season’s earlier online league matches or from Blizzard’s offices in nearby Irvine.

The pin marks the Anaheim Convention Center at 800 West Katella Avenue, the announced home of BlizzCon 2019 on November 1–2. It identifies the verified live final venue without claiming a particular hall or backstage room that the surviving public records do not establish.
