Esports | Overwatch | San Francisco Shock — The Four-Map Sweep at Wells Fargo Center

On September 29, 2019, San Francisco Shock and Vancouver Titans faced each other at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center for the championship match of the Overwatch League’s second season. More than 11,000 spectators watched the series end with four Shock map wins before Vancouver recorded one.

This was Blizzard’s original Overwatch on Windows PC, played on the league’s tournament Patch 1.39—not Overwatch 2, which had not yet been released. Each six-player lineup was locked on every map to two damage, two tank, and two support roles; players could change heroes within their role, while teams could substitute personnel between maps.

The Grand Final was first to four map wins, and each map used its own objective rather than a universal point total. Control rewarded capture-round wins, Hybrid combined an opening capture point with a payload route, Assault counted captured objectives through time-bank attacks, and Escort measured how many payload checkpoints a team completed.

Vancouver arrived through the upper bracket after the league’s best regular-season record, while San Francisco had lost its playoff opener 4–3 to Atlanta Reign. The Shock then swept London Spitfire, Los Angeles Gladiators, Hangzhou Spark, and New York Excelsior to reach Philadelphia through the lower bracket.

San Francisco opened with sinatraa and Striker on damage and won Lijiang Tower 2–0. For Eichenwalde, Rascal and Architect replaced them; both teams completed the initial route, but the Shock advanced 55.5 percent on the extra attack against Vancouver’s 55.4 percent, producing a 4–3 objective score and a 2–0 series lead.

Sinatraa and Striker returned for Temple of Anubis, where another time-bank sequence ended 4–3 for San Francisco. Rascal and Architect came back on Watchpoint: Gibraltar, and the Shock completed all three escort checkpoints before holding Vancouver after its second, closing the map 3–2 and the series 4–0.

The Shock’s tank-and-support core—smurf, ChoiHyoBin, Viol2t, and Moth—played every map, while Vancouver fielded Haksal, SeoMinSoo, TiZi, JJANU, Twilight, and SLIME throughout. ChoiHyoBin received Finals MVP; San Francisco earned its first Overwatch League championship and the season champion’s $1.1 million prize.

The building at 3601 South Broad Street was still named Wells Fargo Center on the match date; it became Xfinity Mobile Arena in September 2025. Its South Philadelphia façade remains the physical reference point for a final played before Overwatch’s later switch from six-player teams to the five-player Overwatch 2 format.
