Esports | Overwatch | London Spitfire — The 3-0 Championship Clincher at Barclays Center
kevin
On 28 July 2018, the London Spitfire returned to the stage at Barclays Center in Brooklyn needing one more match win against the Philadelphia Fusion to become the inaugural Overwatch League champion.
Blizzard Entertainment ran the Overwatch League as the publisher-sanctioned circuit for the original Overwatch, and the 2018 playoffs used the Windows PC tournament client based on patch 1.25, with the newly reworked Symmetra disabled.
The Grand Finals were a best-of-three series of matches, with each match decided through a best-of-five map structure, so London’s 3-1 victory on Friday gave the team a 1-0 series lead but did not yet award the championship.
Saturday’s starting six placed birdring and Profit on damage roles, Gesture and Fury on tanks, and Bdosin and NUS on support, while Philadelphia opened with EQO, Carpe, SADO, Poko, Boombox, and neptuNo.
London won Junkertown, then took Lijiang Tower, and completed the sweep on King’s Row, producing a 3-0 map score for the second match and a 2-0 match score for the two-day championship series.
Those numbers describe different scoring levels: maps decided each match, while match wins decided the Grand Finals, a distinction that prevents the published 3-0 Saturday result from being mistaken for the overall series score.
Park “Profit” Joon-yeong received Grand Finals MVP honors, and the Spitfire collected the $1 million first prize while Philadelphia finished runner-up with $400,000 from the $1.4 million finals prize pool.
The result closed a playoff run in which London entered as the fifth seed and Philadelphia as the sixth, making the season’s two lowest-seeded playoff qualifiers the teams that reached the league’s first title series.
Barclays Center’s own event archive confirms that the sold-out Grand Finals occupied the arena on July 27 and 28, and the pin marks its official address at 620 Atlantic Avenue rather than Blizzard’s California studio or either team’s nominal home city.
The cover photograph was taken two months before the final and shows the Barclays Center exterior; it documents the physical venue, not the players or the championship match.
