Princess Hours|Seongyojang — The Gangneung House Where He Said Forever

The summer palace in Princess Hours is not a palace. It is Seongyojang, a Joseon scholar's house four kilometres toward Gyeongpo from central Gangneung, and it is the room where Lee Shin tells Chae-gyeong he wants to live with her for the rest of his life.

Travel guides from the first wave of Hallyu tours flagged the dinner and the confession here. The estate was begun in 1703 by a descendant of Prince Hyoryeong. Hallaekjeong, the pavilion over the lotus pond outside the gate, is the photograph everyone takes. Inside the wall: an anchae, a sarangchae called Yeolhwadang, and a garden that still belongs to the family line that built it.

The house is a state-designated folk property and it is open to visitors. You buy a ticket. You walk the same packed-earth path to the pond. The drama needed a place that felt like retreat rather than ceremony. Seongyojang is that scale. Not a throne. A house with books and a pavilion over water.

If you come in summer the lotuses are up. The line from the dinner still sits on the pond whether you remember the Korean or only the look on Ju Ji-hoon's face.
