Princess Hours|Unhyeongung Palace — The Western-Style House That Stood In for a Living Court

The white two-storey house inside Unhyeongung is not a Joseon throne hall. It is Yanggwan, a 1912 reception building of brick and wood, and Princess Hours used it as the face of a monarchy that still ran the country in 2006.

VisitKorea's old Gung location page is blunt about the split: interiors were shot on a set in Osan. The exteriors that fans still walk were here, on the Unni-dong campus grounds of the old residence of Heungseon Daewongun. The drama needed a palace that could sit next to taxis and schoolbags. Unhyeongung already did that. Gojong lived on this plot until he was twelve. The compound is now a free public museum a short walk from Anguk Station.

Stand in the courtyard and the scale is domestic, not imperial. Low tiled roofs. A gate that opens onto ordinary Jongno streets. That is why the show works when Shin and Chae-gyeong leave for school. The court is not sealed behind Gwanghwamun. It is a house with a wall, and the wall has a door onto the city.

The stones underfoot are the same ones the cameras used. You do not need a ticket line to feel the joke the drama built here: a crown prince who still has to walk out of a real Seoul neighbourhood.
