Racing | Formula 1 | 1952 German Grand Prix — Ascari Secures His First World Title at the Nürburgring

With two laps remaining on 3 August 1952, Alberto Ascari brought the number 101 Ferrari into the Nürburgring pits because much of its oil was in the cockpit, allowing Giuseppe “Nino” Farina to pass while the tail tank was replenished.

The XV Großer Preis von Deutschland was round six of the eight-race World Championship of Drivers, but—like the other European championship rounds that season—it was contested under Formula Two regulations rather than the normally expected Formula One specification.

Ascari had started from pole after a 10 minute 4.4 second qualifying lap and led the works Ferraris around the 22.810-kilometre Nürburgring Nordschleife until that late stop, which put Farina nine seconds ahead according to Motor Sport’s contemporary report.

Before the end of the next lap Ascari caught and passed Farina, then completed the 18-lap, 410.58-kilometre race in 3 hours 6 minutes 13.3 seconds, winning by 14.1 seconds.

The final classification placed Rudi Fischer’s privately entered Ferrari third and Piero Taruffi’s works car fourth, one lap down, while the official archive records Felice Bonetto as disqualified rather than merely retired.

Ascari also set the fastest lap at 10 minutes 5.1 seconds, so his eight points for victory plus the era’s one fastest-lap point gave him a fourth consecutive nine-point result.

Only a driver’s best four results counted toward the 1952 championship, making Ascari’s 36 points the maximum score and securing his first World Drivers’ Championship with the Dutch and Italian rounds still to run.

The pin marks the Nürburgring circuit complex at Nürburg rather than a speculative point on the lap, and the 22.810-kilometre 1927–1966 Nordschleife used here must not be confused with today’s shortened 20.832-kilometre Nordschleife or the modern Grand Prix circuit.
