Biography | Kam Ghaffarian — The Goddard Campus Where a Lockheed Hire First Touched NASA Work

Ghaffarian's first space paycheck was not from a company with his name on the door.

Forbes places the start at Lockheed in 1983, as a principal systems engineer on the Spacelab Data Processing Facility, the ground system that handled data from the reusable laboratory flown in the Space Shuttle payload bay.

The Houston Chronicle's 2021 profile of him repeats that Lockheed assignment and the next stop: Ford Aerospace, leading support to the Microelectronics Branch at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt.

Spacelab flew with the shuttle from 1983 to 1998.

Ghaffarian was a contractor inside that pipeline, not a civil servant.

He later held posts at Loral after Ford Aerospace changed hands.

The work trained him in how NASA actually buys engineering — contracts, centers, and the long tail of mission operations — which is the business he would found in 1994 as Stinger Ghaffarian Technologies, a few minutes west of this gate on Greenbelt Road.

Goddard remains a working NASA center.

Visitors see the campus from the public roads and the visitor facilities NASA opens; the labs behind the fence are not a walk-in museum.

The point of standing here is the scale of the place that hired the young engineer, not a plaque with his name.
