Biography | David Joyner — The Farmington Avenue Campus Where a Texas Graduate Started at Aetna

Aetna's home office still occupies the Colonial Revival building at 151 Farmington Avenue in Hartford's Asylum Hill.

James Gamble Rogers designed the 1931 structure; later wings filled out a campus that local reporting still treats as one of the city's insurance landmarks.

J. David Joyner arrived here after the 1986 Texas Tech degree, as an employee-benefit representative.

CVS Health's 2025 proxy statement traces his career with the company and its predecessors to that Aetna start in 1986.

The line is easy to misread. CVS did not own Aetna then. The Hartford insurer was still independent; CVS completed the Aetna acquisition in 2018.

The proxy is counting lineage, not a 1986 CVS badge.

From Hartford he moved into pharmacy-benefit work, joining Caremark Prescription Services as a regional sales manager.

Caremark's own geography shifted around him — Birmingham, Nashville, Northbrook — before the 2007 combination with CVS put the PBM under a Woonsocket parent.

The Farmington Avenue campus is the first workplace that can be pinned without guessing which regional office issued his first Caremark card.

The building is public-facing as a corporate campus, not a private house. The cupola still reads from the avenue.

Joyner would return to the Aetna name much later, after CVS owned it, and then leave the combined company in 2020 before coming back in 2023.

The 1986 start is the clean origin of that loop: a finance graduate from Lubbock walking into this Farmington Avenue campus and learning the employee-benefit trade from the inside.
