Racing | Formula 1 | 1953 Swiss Grand Prix — Ascari Recovers to Secure His Second World Title at Bremgarten
kevin
At the start-and-finish area in the Bremgarten forest outside Bern on 23 August 1953, Juan Manuel Fangio put a Maserati on pole, but Alberto Ascari started beside him in Ferrari 500 number 46 with the World Drivers’ Championship within reach.
This was the eighth round of the nine-event 1953 championship, whose European Grands Prix were run to Formula Two regulations, so calling the field contemporary Formula One cars would blur the rules that shaped the season.
Fangio’s official grid time was 2 minutes 40.1 seconds, six-tenths faster than Ascari, yet the Ferrari led by the end of the opening lap and built a substantial advantage around Bremgarten’s 7.280-kilometre road course.
The contemporary Motor Sport report records that Ascari’s engine lost power on lap 39 and that a pit stop traced the problem to an obstructed carburettor jet, returning him to the race in fourth place behind Ferrari teammates Giuseppe “Nino” Farina and Mike Hawthorn.
Ascari recovered both positions, regained the lead with eleven laps remaining, and completed all 65 laps and 473.2 kilometres in 3 hours 1 minute 34.4 seconds.
The final classification placed Farina second, 72.93 seconds behind, and Hawthorn third, 95.96 seconds behind, while Fangio shared Felice Bonetto’s Maserati and was classified fourth, one lap down.
Formula 1’s archive credits Ascari with the fastest lap at 2 minutes 41.3 seconds on lap 50, while Motor Sport’s contemporary prose reports 2 minutes 42 seconds on lap 44; both sources agree that he earned the fastest-lap point and that the win made his championship lead unassailable.
The final season table lists Ascari on 34.5 points, Fangio on 27.5, and Farina on 26, making Bremgarten the place where Ascari secured his second consecutive World Drivers’ Championship.
The road course wound through the Bremgartenwald with almost no straight section, and the pin marks the historical circuit rather than central Bern; the accompanying modern diagram identifies the route and corner names but does not depict the 1953 race.
