Biography | David Joyner — The October Morning the Board Made Him CEO

On 17 October 2024 the CVS Health board appointed J. David Joyner president and chief executive officer, effective that day, and seated him on the board.

The company announced the change the next morning from Woonsocket.

Karen S. Lynch stepped down as president, CEO, and director on the same date, by agreement with the board. Roger N. Farah moved from independent chairman to executive chairman.

Joyner was sixty. Immediately before the vote he had been executive vice president and president of Pharmacy Services, the job he had held since January 2023.

Reuters and other market desks tied the change to pressure over the share price and to losses in the Aetna Medicare Advantage book. The filing itself does not litigate those causes. It records the titles and the date.

The headquarters at One CVS Drive is where the company dates the announcement. The board could have met elsewhere; the public record is the Woonsocket release and the SEC address block.

In November 2025 the same board elected him chair, effective 1 January 2026, with Michael Mahoney remaining lead independent director.

That later vote belongs to a different calendar year. This pin is the October morning he first held the CEO title.
