Biography | Henry Kissinger — The Theater Homecoming That Brought His Family Back to Fürth

On 15 December 1975, Henry Kissinger walked into the Stadttheater Fürth as the American secretary of state and as a son of the city his family had been forced to leave.

The ceremony presented him with Fürth’s Golden Citizen’s Medallion, an honor the city had approved earlier but that he received in person on this visit.

His parents, Paula and Louis, stood beside him, with his brother Walter and Mayor Kurt Scherzer also present.

That family grouping gave the occasion a meaning beyond municipal pageantry.

The Kissingers had fled Fürth for the United States in 1938 after Nazi persecution barred Jews such as Louis, a teacher, from their professions and made ordinary life increasingly unsafe.

Thirty-seven years later, the same family appeared together on the theater steps before a crowd gathered in their former hometown.

Stars and Stripes preserved that outdoor scene in its archive, while a later account in Die Zeit records that Henry and Walter returned together with their parents for the first time on this visit.

A local chronicle also records letters sent afterward by Henry, Walter and their parents, describing the family as grateful and moved by the reception.

Contemporary coverage described the medallion as recognition for his efforts toward peace, a civic judgment about the city’s most internationally prominent native rather than a final verdict on every policy he shaped.

The Fürth ceremony could acknowledge that achievement without settling the arguments surrounding his wider record.

What the theater supplied was a different scale of history: a statesman usually photographed beside presidents and treaties was briefly framed by parents, brother, mayor and the city from which he had escaped.
