Biography | Katy Perry — The Nokia Theatre Night That Made Firework Video of the Year
kevin
The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards gave Katy Perry a prize that matched the visual ambition on which her breakthrough had been built.
On 28 August 2011, the ceremony returned to Nokia Theatre at L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles, the venue now called Peacock Theater.
Perry arrived with more nominations than any other performer that year, but the important result came at the end of the competition when Firework was named Video of the Year.
Contemporary reports from the Los Angeles Times, Billboard and Reuters independently identify the winning video, the date and the Los Angeles ceremony.
The result made Firework more than another number-one single from Teenage Dream, because the award recognized the music video as the central work rather than treating its imagery as decoration around a chart hit.
The video had connected the song to a sequence of people discovering confidence in public, giving the anthem a visual argument about visibility and self-acceptance.
Perry also won Best Collaboration and Best Special Effects for E.T. with Kanye West, bringing her total to three awards during the same ceremony.
Those wins captured two complementary sides of her early peak: Firework presented emotional directness, while E.T. depended on elaborate transformation and effects.
Nokia Theatre therefore became the place where Perry's brightly engineered pop persona received the industry's leading music-video prize on the same night that its technical craft was also recognized.
The building at 777 Chick Hearn Court opened under the Nokia name, became Microsoft Theater in 2015, and adopted the Peacock Theater name in 2023.
The coordinate marks the public theater building recorded by Wikidata rather than an invented location inside the auditorium or on the awards stage.
The photograph was taken in November 2008 and shows the Nokia-branded exterior as visitors would have encountered it near the time of the 2011 ceremony, but it is architectural context rather than an event photograph.
For Perry's biography, this place marks the point at which the videos surrounding her songs were formally acknowledged as a defining part of the work itself.
