By late 2021, Katy Perry no longer needed a single awards telecast to prove that she could command a large stage, so she built a stage that could hold an entire phase of her career.

On 29 December 2021, she opened Play at Resorts World Theatre on the Las Vegas Strip.

Billboard and Las Vegas Weekly independently reported the opening night, the venue and the residency title, while local station KSNV confirmed that the first performance took place that Wednesday in a sold-out theater.

The production treated familiar songs as parts of an oversized domestic fantasy, surrounding Perry with giant household objects, dancing mushrooms and deliberately exaggerated props.

That scale did not simply repeat the touring spectacle of earlier years, because a residency allowed the visual world to remain installed in one purpose-built venue instead of being rebuilt from city to city.

The format also turned a catalog accumulated across more than a decade into a stable Las Vegas show, linking early breakthroughs such as I Kissed a Girl with later songs including Roar and Firework.

Resorts World identifies its theater as a multi-level performance venue designed by Scéno Plus, with the audience kept unusually close to a stage built for large productions.

Perry's opening arrived less than seven months after Resorts World Las Vegas itself began welcoming the public, placing her among the artists who established the new resort's entertainment identity.

It does not identify a dressing room, backstage route, hotel room or precise point within the theater, and it reveals nothing about Perry's private movements.
