Biography | Aristotle — Born in the City Philip Later Razed and Rebuilt

People treat Aristotle as an Athenian product. He was not.

He was born in 384 BC in Stagira, a small Ionian colony on a two-hill peninsula on the east coast of Chalkidiki.

The ruins sit beside modern Olympiada, about 55 kilometres east of Thessaloniki, at the place now called Liotopi.

His father, Nicomachus, was physician to Amyntas III of Macedon. His mother, Phaestis, came from a family with land at Chalcis on Euboea.

That court connection, not an Athenian one, is the first fact of the life.

Stagira had been founded around 655 BC by settlers from Andros. It minted its own coinage, with a boar as the civic emblem.

Philip II of Macedon took and destroyed the city in 348 BC. Aristotle was already in Athens by then.

A few years later Philip rebuilt it and brought the old inhabitants back. The usual account is that the rebuild was part of the bargain for Aristotle to tutor the king's son.

What you walk through today is that mixed city: fifth-century walls on the southern hill, Philip's later wall on the northern one, a stoa, house foundations, and an aqueduct cut after the destruction.

The exact house of Nicomachus is gone. The pin is the public archaeological site, not a reconstructed nursery.

The town later called Aristotle its oikistes, its second founder, because the rebuild is what kept the place on the map.

Stand on the peninsula and the geography does the work the biographies skip. This was a Macedonian-facing harbour town, not a suburb of the Academy.

That is why a Stagirite could spend twenty years in Athens and still be hired, later, to teach a Macedonian prince in a grove near Naoussa.
