Biography | Aristotle — Twenty Years Inside Plato's Grove

The usual picture is a quarrel on arrival. The dates do not support it.

Around 367 BC, at about seventeen, Aristotle left Stagira for Athens and entered Plato's Academy.

He stayed until Plato died in 347 BC. That is twenty years, not a term.

The site is west of the ancient walls, in the olive ground later called Akademeia. The archaeological park still occupies that ground.

Plato was in Sicily when the young man first arrived, and did not return until about 365 BC. Aristotle's first teachers on the spot were the working mathematicians of the school.

Later writers say Plato called him the reader, and also the mind of the place. Those nicknames come from late biographical tradition, not from a dated letter.

What the twenty years produced is clearer than the nicknames. Aristotle taught rhetoric inside the Academy. He began the biological notes that later filled the Lyceum shelves.

He also spent those years as a metic. He could listen to Athenian politics. He could not vote in it.

When Plato died, Speusippus, Plato's nephew, took the school. Aristotle left with Xenocrates for Assos on the coast of Asia Minor.

The break is real. It is also later than the cartoon of a student storming out in year one.

The pin is the Academy archaeological site, the same grove that already holds a Plato collection on this map. This memory is the arrival and the long stay, not the founding of the school.

A visitor walking the park today is walking a suburban excavation, not a colonnade. Say that out loud before you look for a lecture hall that was never built in stone.
