Biography | Aristotle — The Nymphaeum Where He Taught Alexander

The school was not a palace classroom in Pella. It was a sanctuary of the nymphs in the hills above the Macedonian plain.

In 343 BC Philip II hired Aristotle to tutor his son Alexander, then about thirteen.

The classroom was the Nymphaeum at Mieza, near present-day Naoussa in Imathia. Plutarch is the main narrative source for the arrangement.

Between two natural caves the rock was cut vertical. An Ionic colonnade and a covered gallery were added, so the walks themselves became the school.

Alexander was not the only pupil. The group included companions who later ran the Hellenistic world: Hephaestion, Ptolemy, Cassander, and others of that generation.

The course ran about three years, from 343 to 340 BC. In 340 Alexander, at sixteen, left to act as regent while Philip campaigned toward Perinthos and Byzantion.

What was taught is reconstructed from later report: ethics, politics, poetry, mathematics, and natural science. Alexander kept a copy of the Iliad associated with Aristotle for the rest of his life.

Philip's side of the bargain was Stagira. The city he had destroyed in 348 BC was rebuilt and its people returned.

The ruins you can stand in now are that mid-fourth-century complex: caves, column drums, a later theater nearby, and, in recent seasons, a huge terraced gymnasium a short walk from the nymphaeum.

The pin is the Nymphaeum itself, not the town centroid of Naoussa.

A modern statue of Aristotle stands near the path. It is a later marker. The rock-cut stoa is the thing that belongs to the years 343 to 340.
