Eric Schmidt joined Sun Microsystems in 1983 as a software manager, one year after the company was founded.
He rose through software engineering and product roles and in February 1994 became chief technology officer.
He held the CTO position until March 1997, when he left to become CEO of Novell.
During his years at Sun he was involved in the promotion and development of the Java programming language.
Sun’s early headquarters and major operations were in the Mountain View and broader Silicon Valley area.
The Sun chapter formed the long technical and management apprenticeship that preceded his later CEO roles at Novell and Google.
