Biography | Eric Schmidt — Becomes Executive Chairman as Larry Page Takes the CEO Role

On 20 January 2011 Google announced a change in its top leadership.
Eric Schmidt would step down as CEO effective 4 April 2011 and become Executive Chairman.
Larry Page, co-founder, would assume the role of CEO and day-to-day operations.
Sergey Brin would focus on strategic projects under the title of Co-Founder.
Schmidt described the move as a simplification of management structure after a decade as CEO.
As Executive Chairman he planned to concentrate on external relationships, partnerships, government outreach and advising Page and Brin.
The transition closed the period in which Schmidt had provided the experienced operational leadership that guided Google from a young search company through its public offering and major product expansions.
