Larry Page and Sergey Brin developed the core of what became Google while graduate students at Stanford University.
The William Gates Computer Science Building, completed in 1996, housed the Computer Science Department where they worked.
PageRank and the early search system grew out of research conducted in the building.
A September 1997 brainstorming session in room 360 of the B wing is recorded as the place where the name Google was chosen.
The pair met at Stanford in 1995 and by 1998 had incorporated the company after the project outgrew the campus servers.
The Gates Building remains the public landmark of the academic origin of the search engine.
