On 10 August 2015 Larry Page announced a major reorganization of Google.
Sundar Pichai was named CEO of Google as the company prepared to become a subsidiary of the new holding company Alphabet.
Page and Sergey Brin moved to lead Alphabet, while Pichai took charge of the core Google businesses including search, advertising, Android, YouTube and maps.
The appointment formalized the expanded operating role Pichai had already been carrying.
It marked the transition from the founding pair’s direct day-to-day leadership of the search company to a new generation of product-led management.
Pichai later also became CEO of Alphabet itself.
