Biography|Henrik Holmberg — Buried on Malmö’s New Southern Cemetery

S:t Pauli södra kyrkogård opened in 1904, the third of three cemeteries the city cut between Föreningsgatan and Östra Farmvägen as Malmö outgrew its older ground.

Henrik Holmberg was buried here the following winter.

He died in Malmö on 16 February 1905, aged fifty-two. The next day’s Sydsvenska Dagbladet Snällposten recorded the cause: blood poisoning after a rusty nail went through his foot. The parish register on svenskagravar.se places the grave on this southern cemetery.

He had been elected to the city council only the year before. He was still major and chief of the southern road-and-water district. The harbour works, the artesian water, and the new park were not finished stories. They were a job interrupted.

What the ground holds is a provincial engineer who happened to run, for seven years, the contractor that later took the name Skanska, and who then spent a decade making Malmö’s water, slips, and parks work at the scale the city had decided to become.

The name on the stone is Henrik Birger Emanuel Holmberg. The career is the harbour you passed on the way in, and the park west of here that opened five years before he died.
