Biography|Henrik Holmberg — The Marsh His City Turned Into Slottsparken

Slottsparken looks inevitable now: water, beech, open grass against Malmöhus.

In the 1890s it was wet military ground. Kronprinsens husarregemente drilled here until the regiment needed more room south of Regementsgatan and the city took the leftover marsh.

Holmberg was already Malmö’s chief engineer when the ground changed hands.

In 1896 the city staged the Nordic Industry and Craft Exhibition along Fersens väg. Holmberg chaired the building section. With the city gardener J. C. Wolff he laid out a temporary exhibition planting that the municipality then decided to keep.

Wolff’s own park plan was set aside as dated. The Dane Edvard Glæsel, working in an Olmsted register — a park for every age and class, not a parade ground for the well-dressed — delivered the design the city built.

Work started in 1897. The park opened in 1900. Twenty-one hectares of reshaped ground, two ponds, a fen, and a path system that still tells you where to walk.

Holmberg does not get the designer’s credit. He gets the municipal one. Wikipedia’s summary of his Malmö works names Slottsparken beside the harbour and the sewer. An SLU thesis on the park’s making records Holmberg and Wolff together on the 1896 exhibition ground that became the excuse to keep the land green.

A visitor standing at the big pond is not standing in Glæsel’s drawing office. They are standing in the public-works job Holmberg held while the marsh was dug, filled, and opened.

The castle next door is older. The park is the city he served.
