Biography|Henrik Holmberg — The Year Malmö Put Him Over Harbour and City Works

Malmö first borrowed Henrik Holmberg in 1885.

The city called him down from harbour work in Varberg to walk, line by line, a sewer plan drawn by the Danish engineer Charles Ambt. That review is the first dated moment the municipal record ties him to Malmö’s ground.

Nine years later the city hired him outright.

In 1894 he became överingenjör in Malmö stad, with the brief to lead the city’s and the harbour’s public works. He left Skånska Cementgjuteriet the same year.

The list of jobs that followed is a map of a port city growing faster than its pipes. He enlarged the waterworks to tap artesian groundwater. He pushed a harbour expansion that added steam-ferry berths and heavy unloading gear. He built Rörsjöbron, laid out Rörsjömarken for building, and sat on the finance board that had to pay for all of it.

The harbour is the right pin for that appointment. The ferry slips and the cranes were not ornaments. They were how Malmö meant to stay a freight city after sail had gone.

Holmberg kept a second uniform. He had been commissioned lieutenant in Väg- och vattenbyggnadskåren in 1886, captain in 1891, and in 1903 major and chief of the corps’ southern district. The municipal title and the military one ran in parallel. One paid him to move water and ships through Malmö. The other placed him over the state’s road-and-water district that covered the same coast.

In 1904 the city elected him to the stadsfullmäktige. He had eleven months left.
