Biography | Paul Otellini — Named Intel's Fifth CEO in This Hall

People treat an Intel succession as a memo that leaves Mission College Boulevard.

This one was counted in a convention hall at half past eight in the morning.

Intel's 2005 proxy told stockholders the annual meeting would be held at 8:30 a.m. Pacific Time on 18 May 2005 at the Santa Clara Convention Center, 5001 Great America Parkway.

CNET and the San Francisco Chronicle both reported from that room. Craig Barrett handed the chief-executive title to Paul Otellini.

Barrett became chairman. Andrew Grove left the board.

Otellini was 54 and a 31-year Intel employee. He was also the first chief executive in the company's history who was not trained as an engineer.

The board had announced the plan the previous November. The meeting made it effective.

Intel Free Press later published the pair on the meeting floor: Otellini and Barrett facing reporters on the day the title changed.

Revenue during the eight years that followed is usually given, in Intel's later tally and in the New York Times obituary, as a rise from about 34 billion dollars to about 53 billion dollars.

The smartphone business he wanted did not arrive. The data-center business did.

He retired in May 2013 and was succeeded by Brian Krzanich.
