On Thursday 31 August 1989, the Rolling Stones opened the Steel Wheels tour at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia, with Living Colour opening the evening. Anthony DeCurtis's account for Rolling Stone, published on 19 October, makes the interruption more precise. During "Shattered," the stadium's entire sound system went dead. That separation is the night's place-based argument. A stadium concert was not simply a club performance enlarged. It depended on a coordinated electrical and public-address system capable of carrying a large band across an open bowl. The first official night of the tour exposed that dependency almost immediately: the visual cues could continue while the performance, as heard by the audience, could not.

Later in September, reviewing the same touring production at RFK Stadium, Richard Harrington described a structure about 300 feet wide and ten stories high, with three large video screens. Neither contemporary account establishes the technical cause beyond a power/sound-system failure, so this memory does not assign blame or speculate about faulty equipment. It records the operational fact that distinguishes 31 August from the second Philadelphia show on 1 September.
