On August 13, 2023, Vance Kelley and Tord Reklev sat across a table inside Pacifico Yokohama’s Exhibition Halls A–D with the Pokémon Trading Card Game Masters Division world title between them.

The Pokémon Company International ran the publisher-sanctioned 2023 Pokémon World Championships at this waterfront convention complex from August 11 through 13. The Masters final used the physical Pokémon TCG’s 2023 Standard format: regulation-mark E, F, and G cards, plus older printings of cards with a currently legal reprint, with Scarlet & Violet—Paldea Evolved included in the pool.

Kelley, representing the United States, brought a Mew VMAX and Genesect V deck built around the Fusion Strike engine. Norway’s Reklev answered with Gardevoir ex, a deck that moved Psychic Energy from the discard pile to build powerful attackers.

A Pokémon TCG deck contains 60 cards, and each player begins with six Prize cards set aside. A player usually wins a game by taking all six prizes through knockouts, leaving the opponent without a Pokémon in play, or making the opponent unable to draw; the championship match was best-of-three games.

Kelley had entered through the longer Day 1 route, while Reklev’s season record granted him a Day 2 invitation. Both advanced from the 170-player Masters field and then through the single-elimination top eight.

In Game 1, Kelley’s Genesect V cards let him cycle rapidly through his deck while Reklev’s Gardevoir setup developed. Kelley took the opening game after Reklev missed the energy draw needed to reverse the position.

Several mulligans delayed the start of Game 2, and Reklev recovered to level the match at one game each. That forced a deciding third game with fewer than six minutes remaining on the 75-minute match clock.

Ordinary timed matches end after a prescribed number of additional turns, but a world final must produce a champion. Play therefore continued until one player gained the required Prize-card advantage.

Reklev took a knockout during the extension, Kelley answered, and Reklev then collected a single Prize card with Cresselia. Kelley used Switch Cart to move Mew VMAX into position, played Boss’s Orders to bring Reklev’s Zacian V forward, and secured the deciding knockout; Reklev offered a handshake, completing Kelley’s 2–1 victory.

The official results identify Kelley as the 2023 Masters Division champion with Mew VMAX and Genesect V, and Reklev as runner-up with Gardevoir ex. An independent match account records the same finalists, deck archetypes, game sequence, overtime condition, and result.

The pin marks Pacifico Yokohama at 1-1-1 Minatomirai, the complex named in the event archive, rather than another Yokohama Pokémon activation. The cover is a 2008 exterior view of the exact Exhibition Hall building, not a photograph of the final.
