Military History | Kuninkaanportti, Suomenlinna — The Year That Was Never Cut

Up the King's Stairs from the water, four stone tablets are set into the walls flanking the gate. Two of them name kings.

The gate stands on Kustaanmiekka (Gustavssvärd in Swedish) at the southern tip of the fortress the Swedish crown named Sveaborg in 1750, rendered in Finnish as Viapori and renamed Suomenlinna in 1918. The Governing Body of Suomenlinna, which runs the islands, dates the gate 1753–54; Sofia Gustafsson, writing for the University of Helsinki's Sveaborg-Viapori project, gives 1753–56 and follows Oscar Nikula in attributing the first design to the crown's superintendent Carl Hårleman, who died in February 1753, probably before the work began.

It marks a royal inspection. Adolf Frederick toured Finland in the summer of 1752, the first Swedish king to do so in a century, and the Governing Body says the gate stands where his ship lay; the Ehrensvärd Society calls that tradition rather than record. Juha-Matti Granqvist sets out what the king reported to the council of state on returning: that Sveaborg was being built wastefully and shoddily, and that the main works had gone up on entirely the wrong islands. Adolf Frederick's name is on none of the tablets.

The left-hand tablet reads "Här har KONUNG FREDRIK låtit lägga den första sten år 1748." Opposite it: "och KONUNG GUSTAF har lagt den sidste sten år" — and then dressed stone, blank.

Beneath the blank, a larger tablet says that from wilderness these Vargskiär islets have been turned into a Sueaborg, and then carries the sentence Finland has quoted ever since: EFTERVÄRD stå här på egen botn och lita icke på främmande hielp. Posterity, stand here on your own ground and do not trust foreign help. It was cut in the 1750s, on a fortress the crown financed partly with French subsidies, half a century before the 1808 surrender it now gets read against. The gate has been refurbished four times since 1925. The year is still not cut.
