Racing | Formula 1 | 2006 Japanese Grand Prix — Alonso Takes Control of the Title at Suzuka

On lap 36 of the 2006 Japanese Grand Prix, Michael Schumacher left the pits still leading Fernando Alonso. Before the lap was complete, the Ferrari’s engine failed and the car stopped beside the Suzuka circuit. Alonso inherited the lead at the place where a close title contest abruptly swung in his favour.

Felipe Massa and Schumacher had locked out the front row for Ferrari, while Alonso started fifth in the Renault R26. Schumacher passed Massa on lap 2 and controlled much of the race. Alonso worked forward, overtaking Ralf Schumacher at Turn 1 on lap 12 and moving into second through the first pit-stop cycle.

Schumacher’s retirement ended a run of 17 consecutive classified finishes and left Alonso clear at the front. The official classification records Alonso completing 53 laps in 1:23:53.413. Massa finished second, 16.151 seconds behind, and Giancarlo Fisichella placed third at 23.953 seconds. Alonso also set the fastest lap—1:32.676 on lap 14.

The result gave Alonso 126 championship points to Schumacher’s 116 with only the Brazilian Grand Prix remaining. Under the scoring system then in use, Alonso needed one point at Interlagos to secure a second consecutive Drivers’ Championship. Schumacher was officially classified as not finishing after completing 36 laps; no post-race penalty changed the podium.

The race used Suzuka’s 5.807-kilometre, 18-turn figure-eight Grand Prix configuration. Its sequence ran from the opening Esses through Degner, the Hairpin, Spoon, 130R and the Casio Triangle. This pin marks Suzuka Circuit in Suzuka, Mie Prefecture—the exact venue of the engine failure and Alonso’s championship-changing victory.
